Review: Dead Leaves/PINE – Split EP

by Deanna Chapman

Dead Leaves and PINE worked on a split EP that will be released this Friday. While PINE had a couple more minutes on the EP than Dead Leaves, you still got a great feel for both bands and an equal amount of songs at two each. If you’re into pop punk and looking for some new bands to listen to, this split would be a good start. Both bands have thoughtful lyrics and the melodies to go along with them.

Dead Leaves kicks off the EP with “I’m Sorry Darling” and PINE follows with “Waste.” Each of these songs is a solid representation of the bands’ musicianship and songwriting abilities. Dead Leaves then follows with “Recycled Air” and PINE closes out with “Lopri.” I found all of these songs to be extremely enjoyable and as I mentioned earlier, gives you a great feel to the bands. This EP is a fantastic introduction to both bands if you’ve never listened to either of them. I highly suggest streaming and/or grabbing a copy of the EP here.

Label Spotlight: Take This To Heart Records

We have a brand new feature launching today: Label Spotlight. There are a ton of small labels working their asses off to bring you music they truly believe in and I wanted to have a chance to give these labels and bands some attention in hopes that you’ll find some new bands you enjoy and some new labels to pay attention to. Our first feature is with Take This To Heart Records (T3H, for short).

Take This To Heart Records is a Massachusetts based record label run by Joe Urban and was started as a way to earn college credit. Since 2012, it’s become so much more than just a project for credit and the label has acquired a good sized roster to help develop in hopes of watching them bloom. The label focuses on vinyl release while also offering digital versions and bundles that often include some great band shirts. Now it’s time to introduce you to the bands.

Roster:

Arrows Over Athens, Dead Leaves, Sundressed, Fossil Youth, No Tide, PINE, Home Movies, Nerve Clinic, Knockout Kid, Traditions, Woodford Way, Wickerwolves

Upcoming Releases:

Dead Leaves/PINE – November 6th (Pre-orders available here)

Recent Music:

Some of the recent releases we’ve been digging from the label have been Fail Better by Nerve Clinic and Dig Up A Miracle by Sundressed. Both have potential to end up on my Albums (and EPs) of the Year list. The label has great taste in music and has done a great job with picking bands to work with. You can stream both of the releases in full below and pick up copies here.
