Interview: Cheerleader

Cheerleader took some time to answer questions about the still growing Philly music scene, their upcoming plans, and more. Check it out below.

When did the members first meet and how did you all know you wanted to be in a band?

Chris and I met while we were in high school, back around 2003 I think. We both dug bands like Nirvana and Radiohead at the time, so we sort of bonded over that. The two of us hit it off musically almost right away (coming together over a cover of Alice Deejay’s better off alone) and have been playing in bands together ever since. The formation of Cheerleader kind of coincided with our move to Philadelphia, and we met the rest of the dudes through the Philly music scene. We all grooved together really well, and got along great right from the start.

What’s it like being part of the growing Philadelphia music scene?

It’s really awesome to be a part of a music community that has such a rich and diverse history, but that has continued to evolve over the years. Right now Philly seems to be a really up and coming kind of place, musically and otherwise, and we’re just really excited to be a part of that. There are so many cool bands here that we are proud to be playing alongside.

You had a release last year, what have you been up to since then?

Well, we went on a couple tours to support our album release. The longest was almost two months, opening for the Wombats. That was probably one of the best experiences we’ve had as a band. We also toured with a band called Civil Twilight for a shorter run of dates. Other than that we’ve been working a lot on writing new material.

What are you doing to gear up for the upcoming tour?

Practice, practice, practice! We’re also working on incorporating some new songs into the set.

Do you have plans to release new music this year?

Maybe not this year, but hopefully in 2017.

Will you be going on a larger tour once you have more new music out?

That’s the plan. We love touring.

Where can our readers keep up with the band?

You guys can keep up with us on all that social media stuff… Twitter, Facebook, Instagram… we’ve got it all.
