Review: Lieutenant – ‘If I Kill This Thing We’re All Going To Eat For A Week

by Deanna Chapman

Lieutenant is Nate Mendel’s solo project. For those who may not know, Nate Mendel has played bass for the Foo Fighters, Sunny Day Real Estate, and a couple of other bands. If you’re looking for some solid new rock music, you should definitely check out lieutenant’s If I Kill This Thing We’re All Going To Eat For A Week. Yes, the album title is quite the mouthful, but don’t worry, the song titles aren’t as daunting.

I’m a firm believer that rock music doesn’t need to be extremely loud and in your face to be enjoyable. Lieutenant is just that. The album captures highs and lows including self-awareness and an intense loneliness. Nate shows that he isn’t just a bass player and can write damn good songs filled with emotion. Some of the standout tracks are “Prepared Remarks,” “Belle Epoque,” and “Artificial Limbs.”

With the Foo Fighters rigorous schedule, I’m impressed that Nate even had time to launch a solo project. Luckily, that also gives him access to the Foo Fighters’ studio, where he recorded this album. It’s a great debut for his solo project and Nate clearly has had a great amount of time and experience to allow himself to hone is songwriting abilities. I look forward to what comes next from Lieutenant and hope we won’t have to wait too terribly long for the next release.
